Tom Barnaby

DCI Tom Barnaby is a detective chief inspector, played by John Nettles in Series 1–13.

Patient, dry and fluent in the old social codes of Midsomer's villages. Tom solves as much by listening to what people avoid saying as by examining what they volunteer.

Who they are

Tom Barnaby is the Detective Chief Inspector at the centre of the first thirteen series, played by John Nettles from the 1997 pilot through Fit for Murder in 2011. He is introduced in The Killings at Badger’s Drift as an experienced Causton detective asked to look into a death that the village would prefer to leave unexamined. His work repeatedly begins with apparently settled communities: a writers’ circle, a cricket club, a nursing home, a school or a country estate. The variety of those cases makes Tom less a specialist than a patient observer of people who know one another too well. He follows practical evidence while taking seriously the rivalries, habits and histories that give an apparently small clue its meaning.

John Nettles’ long run gives Tom room to be both procedural lead and domestic presence. His dry humour is understated, and a pause or kitchen-table exchange can carry as much weight as an interview. Tom listens, lets people explain themselves, and returns to details they have treated as unimportant. He stays in Causton while the supporting cast changes, so continuity rests in his manner of working rather than a fixed team.

Working relationships

Gavin Troy is Tom’s first regular sergeant and the partnership that establishes the show’s original rhythm. Troy tends to voice his first reaction quickly; Tom is more inclined to wait and test it. Their difference gives the early investigations a light comic edge, but it also supplies a practical division of attention: the younger officer’s immediacy beside the senior detective’s accumulated experience. Troy grows from a sergeant into an inspector during his run, and the series allows that change to register without making the relationship disappear. The later guest reunion in Blood Wedding recalls a partnership that has moved beyond the original ranks and workplace routine.

Dan Scott brings a sharper clash of expectations. He arrives in Bad Tidings as a London transfer who regards the county posting as a demotion, so Tom must build cooperation with someone who openly resists the place and its customs. Their cases make that friction part of the investigation rather than a one-off joke. Ben Jones brings a different quality: introduced as a constable, he becomes a reliable detective partner and stays through Tom’s final case. The handover in Fit for Murder then makes Jones the practical link between Tom’s team and John’s. With George Bullard, Tom has a long-standing professional and personal familiarity; the pathologist’s appearances make forensic work feel integrated into the team rather than summoned only for exposition.

Family and home life

Joyce and Cully are not merely an off-duty counterpoint to Tom’s police work. Their activities bring the Barnaby household into contact with the clubs, performances and local events that often sit at the edge of an investigation. Joyce’s curiosity and sociability make her a natural participant in village life, while Cully’s work as an actor gives her reasons to move between places and communities. Their lives remain their own, but the cases repeatedly put Tom’s professional world close to his family’s social world. That proximity provides the series with domestic continuity across stories whose settings and guest casts otherwise change completely.

The family’s most visible milestones are spread over the run rather than concentrated in a separate domestic plot. Cully’s relationship with Simon Dixon comes to the fore in Blood Wedding, a case that places wedding preparations beside Tom’s work. Joyce’s activities also give Tom a reason to step into settings he might otherwise encounter only as a detective. In Fit for Murder, the farewell is consequently personal as well as professional: Tom’s exit concludes a long period in which family life and police work have shared the same screen world. The show leaves the Barnaby household recognisable without suggesting that the family exists only to explain a case.

Key episodes

The Killings at Badger’s Drift. Tom’s first investigation starts with an unexplained death and a village community protecting its own version of events.

Blue Herrings. A visit to his aunt’s nursing home brings family concern and a question about deaths thought to be natural.

Painted in Blood. Joyce discovers a body during an art class while a separate police operation complicates Tom’s inquiry.

The Green Man. A collapsed canal tunnel exposes remains and unsettles the life of a solitary woodsman.

The Sword of Guillaume. A trip to Brighton brings Tom into contact with his cousin John, whose later role changes the series’ centre.

Fit for Murder. A spa break becomes Tom’s final case, bringing his work and retirement into the same story.

How they change

Tom’s development is measured less by a dramatic conversion than by what the series lets him carry forward. At the beginning, he is already established in his work; the audience learns the character through the way he handles new communities and a succession of partners. The first cases set up his attention to small inconsistencies. Later stories keep that habit in place while broadening the institutions he encounters, from schools and clubs to estates, businesses and professional organisations. His seniority is not presented as infallibility. He listens to colleagues, changes direction when evidence demands it, and does not treat village status as proof of honesty or guilt.

The change in the sergeant role is one of the clearest ways to see time passing around him. Troy’s departure, Scott’s brief and uneasy partnership, and Jones’s long service each create a different working environment, while Tom remains the steady point of comparison. His family also moves forward: Cully builds an adult life beyond the household, and Joyce’s interests continue to bring new people within the Barnabys’ orbit. John’s introduction in The Sword of Guillaume prepares viewers for a successor before Tom leaves. Fit for Murder closes the run with a deliberate farewell rather than an abrupt disappearance. Tom’s arrival is the pilot The Killings at Badger’s Drift; his final case is Fit for Murder, Series 13 episode 8.
