Bantling Boy wins at the racecourse, increasing pressure on the four-person syndicate that owns him. Bruce Hartley argues against the others over a lucrative offer and is later found murdered in the horse's stable.

Further deaths strip away the idea that the dispute concerns only shares in a racehorse. Barnaby and Scott trace the owners' relationships to Bantling Hall, where family history and the identity of an heir give the killings a more disturbing logic.

Who was the killer in Bantling Boy? (spoiler)

Peter Craxton (instigator) · Geoffrey (physical killer)

Geoffrey killed Bruce Hartley and was then blackmailed by nine-year-old Peter into killing Dr John Osgood, Trevor Machin and Joanna Craxton. Peter's final order to kill Angela Hartley was refused, so the instigator and physical killer are labelled separately and the interrupted command is not counted as another death.

Verified motive

Geoffrey killed Bruce while intervening against Bruce's abuse of Angela. Peter then exploited Geoffrey's guilt and directed the later murders to protect the secret of Peter's parentage and the inheritance tied to Bantling Boy; he ordered Angela's death when her knowledge threatened that secret too.
