A portrait of Royalist landowner Jonathan Lowrie is slashed inside the Aspern Tallow museum. Further disturbances encourage talk of a restless ghost, until Lowrie's descendant Marcus is discovered dead in the ancestral tomb.
Barnaby and Troy examine the museum trustees, the people staging the haunting and the identity of an escaped prisoner. A therapist who is not quite what she claims and a trustee with a hidden past turn the supposed Civil War mystery into a modern struggle over guilt and reputation.

Charles "Charlie" MacKillop · Ralph BaileyCharlie killed Marcus Lowrie with the slide projector during the grave robbery; Ralph later killed James Tate and buried him in the same grave. The manufactured haunting and conspiracy to destabilise Sandra are kept separate from the two murder attributions.
