A tramp is killed in woodland after a fox hunt, and retiring Superintendent Ronald Pringle arrests a local poacher. Barnaby returns from holiday unconvinced by the solution and reopens the case when the poacher's father is shot dead.
Pringle's own death adds urgency to an investigation already entangled with the Fitzroy estate, the hunt and relationships that cross class lines. What first looks like the killing of a stranger becomes a case about who belongs to the village and whose family history has been hidden.
