Whitcombe Mallet's annual harvest fair brings crowds to the village and business to its equestrian centre. The owner's son is found trampled by his own horse, but the circumstances quickly suggest that somebody used the fair and the animal to stage more than an accident.
Old relationships inside the village prove more important than the public event. Barnaby and Nelson follow the history of two families, a disputed account of the past and the fate of a child whose identity was never as settled as the community believed.

Niall DeeleyNiall killed Harry Wyham and Dale Nevins so that his biological parents Serena and Butch would experience the loss of a child, then killed Clara Myerscough after she discovered who he was. His attempt to kill Serena and Butch was stopped; Jessica Myerscough and Rowena Deeley's separate conspiracy to abduct Amy ended without another death.

Niall sought revenge after the daughter he raised died without a kidney donor: Serena had declined the adoption agency's request for help and had not told Butch that Niall existed. He killed one child from each biological parent so they would feel the same loss, killed Clara when she identified him and finally intended to kill Serena and Butch after making them confront what their silence had cost.
