Elverton-cum-Latterly is preparing a charity drag extravaganza when parish chair Lois Springfield is found dead in the local theatre. Because she opposed the event, hostility towards the performers looks like the obvious context for the crime, particularly after Malik Payne receives a warning and narrowly escapes a car.

A second death after the show and the collapse of terminally ill Rocco Templeton complicate that theory. Barnaby and Winter discover that somebody is trying to begin a new life while preventing a concealed part of the village's past from becoming public.

Who was the killer in Dressed to Kill? (spoiler)

Olivia Dent

Olivia killed Lois Springfield after Lois blocked her proposed Romeo and Juliet production, then electrocuted Evelyn Hardy after learning that Evelyn's father would fund a rival production and tour with Nigel Bellamy. Olivia later held a knife to Nigel, whom she had long idealised, but he disarmed her before another killing. Norinda Bellamy's blackmail, Dickie Dent's van attack on Malik Payne and Gill Templeton's fraud and abuse were separate offences.

Verified motive

Olivia's accumulated disappointments focused on an imagined future with Nigel and her planned Romeo and Juliet production. She killed Lois after Lois blocked and mocked the plan and threatened to expose Olivia's fixation, killed Evelyn when Evelyn secured funding for a rival tour with Nigel, and then turned on Nigel for giving her hope before choosing Evelyn; the final attack on him was interrupted.
