Household companions · John Barnaby
Paddy
Paddy is John and Sarah Barnaby’s dog in Midsomer Murders, appearing in Series 19–present.
The family's second canine companion, joining as the household enters the Jamie Winter period.
Paddy and the later Barnaby family
Paddy is the family’s second canine companion in the John Barnaby period. He joins the Barnaby household from Series 19, as Jamie Winter’s period begins. He therefore belongs with John and Sarah’s domestic setting, not the earlier Tom and Joyce household. His introduction can be placed beside a clear change in the police partnership without making him part of the formal investigating team.
The selected first appearance is The Village That Rose from the Dead. This is also Winter’s opening investigation, so the episode provides two different points of orientation: a new principal sergeant and the later household companion. Keep those roles distinct when comparing the cast. One belongs to the professional partnership around John; the other belongs to the family world outside the police work.
A named episode as a starting point
The Village That Rose from the Dead is the useful original title to retain when finding Paddy’s introduction in a streaming list or on disc. Use the episode page for its premise, cast and filming places, and the wider series index for the investigations that follow.
A change in the household gives a different kind of continuity from a change of inspector or pathologist. On a rewatch, notice where a domestic scene sits within the case and how it changes the pace before the story returns to interviews or forensic findings. That is the Casebook’s suggested way of looking at the family material; it leaves the crime’s solution untouched and does not require an invented private history for the dog.
Following the household and the team
John and Sarah’s character pages are the next links for understanding the family around Paddy. Jamie Winter’s page explains the police partner whose first case coincides with this introduction. The pathologists-in-order guide adds the medical colleagues of the later period, including Kam Karimore and then Fleur Perkins. Together those pages distinguish the home, the partnership and the wider recurring team.
Choose the first episode before trying to build an exhaustive checklist of dog scenes. A single clearly linked case gives you a reliable place to begin, with the following series available if you want to continue.
